What Would You Do?

I know its been a very long time since I posted an article. In fact, I probably have no more readers for this blog at all. However, I wanted to throw a question out there and see what type of responses I get.

If you were working in a place that was making you absolutely miserable, to the point of where it was becoming unhealthy mentally and physically, but you had no other job to go to, what would you do? Would you quit and run attempt to look for another job? Would you stick it out and suffer while looking for another job? What would you do?

This issue has been coming up quite frequently in conversations I have had, life situations, etc. I know what I would do, but I am curious as to what everyone reading this would actually do. I know these circumstances are brief, and you can add your own conditions in your response (i.e. If I had money saved I would . . ., etc.) How would you handle this type of situation?

Step 1: Start looking for another job. That's got to be first, especially in the economic situation.
Step 2: Talk to your boss. We're all human, and no one likes to see someone else suffer. Explain to your boss how much this job is taking out of you, and that if it is possible, could they ease up a little. The worst you'll get is a no.
Step 3: Suck it up. Unless you happen to be independently wealthy, it is much better financially to stick out your current job than to jump ship and start swimming for shore.
Step 4: If you absolutely can't take it anymore, and you have a little nest egg to live from, go for it. Understand though, that it might be harder for you to get another job in a similar or better situation than you were in.

Identify why you're so miserable. If it's something inherent in the job that you're doing, perhaps you want to look for something else.

Platinumwolf,

Thanks for the response - you have some great responses and cover most all the bases in this type of situation.

What a coincidence that I stumble on this subject in your blog. Today I am doing the passive/aggressive thing and called off sick because it has become an absolute miserable place where I work. I am not the passive/aggressive type (I rarely if ever call off sick) but I'm doing what I can to keep my sanity. My situation along with several other long time employees where I work is we are at an age and have too many years in to walk away. For 21 months we have had the administrator from HELL! We have had a 3rd of the staff quit or suddenly decided it was time to retire because of this woman. It is government where I work and the person who oversees this she-devil will not do anything about it. There is a pending lawsuit by a former employee against them for violations of FMLA and ADA. So we're all stuck and the misery rages on. I am 52, have been there for 19 years, receive an excellent income for not having any more than a high school diploma and am one of the few Americans that have a pension. That's why I am hanging on, for the excellent salary and pension. I am also hoping the she-devil will get hit by a truck some time soon. 99% of the staff feel completely unappreciated and of no value by this current administration. She is a micro-manager to the extreme, seems to be very insecure and has a lot of trust issues. If she should find out that you voiced your dissatisfaction to anyone you will be sorry. At least I have about 95% of the other employees to commiserate with. So for me (and many others) because of my situation I have chosen to suck it up best I can and hope that truck comes by soon.

Anon,

Wow! I am so sorry to hear about that situation. Yikes, I've been in similar situations, management can make or break a good work experience. Hang in there! I'm currently in a situation where I am barely hanging on as well - and I'm looking feverishly for a new job! Thus the question posed.

Hi, I hate my job too. I'm contemplating cashing out the 401k and going to school but should probably sell my house to do it. It's paid for but I hate apartments. ARGH

I would have to say, quit!!!!! and do not look back. I was in this situation about two years ago and I thought I was going to catch a case! This woman has many years of seniority and seemed that she was a huge problem for the company to constantly move her around to different locations than to get rid of her. To this very day, I do not regret leaving that place! I have more peace of mind and I tell you what, she was pure evil!
